Grounding Ourselves
Health & Wellness
By Tiffany H. Taft, Ph.D.
As living beings, it is important that we “GROUND” ourselves in strong, solid foundations. Do you even really understand what that means or how to do it? It literally is a way to bring yourself back to earth. Do you find yourself constantly in your head or not being fully present or connected to what is happening right in front of you? Are you exhausted by the list of things to do, or that you believe there are to do? Do you want to create space to welcome in strength, stability, and being grounded? Here are a few steps to help you get started:
1. Breath - Bring your attention to the breath and it enters and leaves your body. After about 5-10 good deep belly breaths, not the chest, you should start to feel much more connected to your physical self.
2. Body – Bring an awareness here to just how you feel. EVERYWHERE. Scan your body head to toe, pause, explore, repeat.
3. Connect – Imagine that you are anchored to earth through the souls of your feet. This anchoring or rooting down connects us to mother earth. Take off those shoes and socks and ground yourself in stillness.
When we allow ourselves to become grounded, we invite ourselves to become a stronger container in which our very spirit can safely and productively dwell as one. If you commit to adopting this practice every day, at the START of your day, you automatically set the tone with intention for your day. When we are grounded, we open the possibilities to be more connected with self and with others. Let us be “rooted and grounded” in LOVE.
