Happy Holidays: Give the Gift of Togetherness

Travel & Destination Corner

By Dr. Pamela Gurley

It's the holiday season, and you know what that means: festive lights, family gatherings, and plenty of cheer. But one thing we can't forget is how important it is to spend quality time with loved ones. Last year was a very strained and distant Christmas for many, so don't let your busy schedule get in the way! This holiday season, give your family the gift of togetherness. There are many ways to do this, whether it's through food or activities. Here are two ideas for everyone in your family:

Holiday Game Night

Who doesn't like a good game night? And not to mention, is it me, or is it colder this year than last year; and let's face it, who wants to frolic in the cold (unless that is your thing). The holidays are a great time to get together for game nights, and here is one that is sure to be lots of laughs. Naughty or Nice Bingo. Using a Word document, make five rows and six columns. In the first row, put B-I-N-G-O. In the columns underneath, write different actions and leave the center as FREE space or a "WILD" card. Actions could be things like burping during dinner, holding the door for the elderly, didn't clean your room, etc.). The more creative you can get, the more laughs you will have. Mix the answers on different sheets. Print on 8.5×11 paper for each player. You can also opt to use a free BINGO generator online.

Cook Together

While some people might feel that the holidays are a time to go home and spend quality time with loved ones, I've always seen it as more of an excuse just to share a meal with family. I mean, what's more fun than stuffing your face while getting the chance to catch up with everyone, watch the parade, football, or movies on TV? Sharing a meal is one thing; being able to enjoy making the meal is something different. Meals are about family, both prepared and eaten. Do something different this year and make something different together to enjoy.

So, whether you're spending this holiday season at home with friends or flying across the country (or the world) for some family bonding time, make sure you get good laughs, good eats, and most of all, good company! From family and friends to new connections, we've seen the power of togetherness this year as the pandemic slowly lifted the travel restraints. If we have learned nothing else over the last year, we learned togetherness matters.
